Chapter 16

Ella and Brenner sat in an orange tent set up at base camp, both of them leaning forward to study the phone placed on the plastic table between them.

The sun had risen now, and it streamed through the fabric, casting vibrant patterns against the cold ground.

Ella shifted her feet on icy gravel, as the tent didn't come with a floor.

"What does it mean?" Brenner said, scowling.

Ella didn't reply at first, her gaze fixated on the screen as the surveillance footage played again. They'd been playing it on loop for the last ten minutes.

"It's her alright," Ella said quietly. She watched as Lila Hunt moved up the side of the brothel boat she'd seen back at the dance club.

She scrutinized the footage as a young woman, her hair tinged with red dye on the tips, paused to speak to someone out of sight, and then continued along the walkway.

And then Ella clicked on the screen, cycling to a second footage stream.

This one was from a week prior. It showed a boat arriving at the dock, near the brothel ship. It showed a small group of tourists disembarking. And it showed another young woman, who looked identical to Lila Hunt, exiting and approaching the Clyde brothers' establishment, a beer in hand, and an easy smile plastered across her face.

Ella clicked back and forth between the two images.

"What does it mean?" Brenner repeated.

"That's our murder victim," Ella said, nodding at the second video with the smiling girl. She paused. "So the Clydes are involved," she said.

"Maybe. Doesn't show that."

"But both girls were at their brothel. Both of them came through. Lila dealt for them. Looks like our murder victim just stopped by for a refuel."

"Doesn't mean it's them," Brenner said with a shrug. "Could just be a point of contact."

Ella frowned. "I still think we need to get them alone in a room. Talk to them."

Brenner tensed. "The Clydes aren't going to come quietly."

"I know," she murmured. She shot him a sidelong glance. The last time they'd tangled with a duo, it had nearly ended with Brenner's death.

She didn't like the idea of returning to Nome, anyway. That was where the hitmen awaited them.

But she also refused to live in fear... She had a job to do, and until proven otherwise, she was going to assume Lila Hunt was still alive.

Ella let out a long, shaky breath, replaying the footage once more.

"See if you can spot anything. Anyone who spoke to the two girls."

"It's just some grainy footage," Brenner replied, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "We've been over it."

She nodded but didn't reply right away. She clicked play again.

As the footage looped, Ella's eyes began to focus on the people moving in the background. She watched as a man in a dark hoodie walked past them, his face hidden behind the hood. He looked normal enough, but something about the way he walked, the way he carried himself stood out to her.

She rewound the video and played it again, watching the man closely.
